Fence Rules in the Towns Around San Antonio
Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, Leon Valley, Converse, Universal City, Schertz, Cibolo and New Braunfels are cities of their own, and a fence inside their city limits goes by that city's rules, not San Antonio's.
Some of the differences are easy to miss. In Leon Valley, a front fence on a house lot can be no taller than 44 inches, and chain link isn't allowed in its front yard at any size. Converse's fence permit form says fence posts go no more than 8 feet apart in concrete and calls for an inspection once the fence is in, which San Antonio's residential fence permit doesn't. Alamo Heights limits how much digging can happen around the roots of a heritage tree, and when Universal City rewrote its fence rules in 2023, it spelled out what counts as minor and what counts as major fence maintenance.
We look up the rules for the city your home is in and plan your fence to them from the start. When one of our pages gives you a fence height or a permit rule, it comes from the city's own published documents or, for a state rule, from the Texas law itself, and the town pages go into more detail if you'd like to read about yours.
